Fire Hydrants Provide Emergency
Relief For City Residents
saving lives in more ways than one.

It's doubtful whether the Fire Department sanctioned this event in an undisclosed neighborhood of New Haven on Sunday Afternoon. Some would say that it's against the law, but taking a wrench to a fire hydrant on a hot summer day has been one form of ingenuity that has ceased to desist since the invention of the hydrant itself. Story continues.

There have been several articles written in recent years about the coming shortage of drinkable water. Although earth contains no less than 2/3 surface of ocean, none of that is freshwater. There may be several thousand lakes and rivers, as well as tributaries in Connecticut alone, but the danger still exists as modernization of man continues to permeate every aspect of our global environment.

The area was in fact marked off with cautionary cones in the road. This may be indication that the event was in fact approved by Regional Water Authority or the Fire Department. Either that, or there were some overly cautious citizens behind the very essential urban experience of the open fire hydrant on a summer day.
